Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
